An Analysis Framework for Access Methods

چکیده
Designing and tuning access methods (AMs) has always been more of a black art than a rigorous discipline, with performance assessments being mostly reduced to presenting bottom-line runtime or I/O numbers. (This paper presents an analysis framework for AMs that gives detailed feedback about observed page access performance and the performance implications of individual aspects of an AM design.) The framework defines performance metrics which are more meaningful than bottom-line numbers and which allow the AM designer to detect and isolate deficiencies in an AM design. The analysis process takes a workload—a tree and a set of queries—as input and provides metrics that characterize the performance of each query as well as that of the tree structure and the structure-shaping aspects of the AM implementation. Central to the framework is the use of the optimal behavior—which can be approximated relatively efficiently—as a point of reference against which the actual observed performance is measured. The performance metrics themselves reflect the fundamental performancerelevant properties of the input tree. The framework applies to most balanced tree-structured AMs and is not restricted to particular types of of data or queries. It is implemented in amdb, a comprehensive graphical design tool for AMs that are constructed on top of the Generalized Search Tree abstraction. Amdb complements the analysis framework with visualization and debugging functionality, allowing the AM designer to investigate the source of those deficiencies that were brought to light with the help of the analysis framework.

Development of the Translating Allied Health Knowledge (TAHK) Framework
Background While evidence-based practice is a familiar concept to allied health clinicians, knowledge translation (KT) is less well known and understood. The need for a framework that enables allied health clinicians to access and engage with KT was identified. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of the Translating Allied Health Knowledge (TAHK) Framework. M...
متن کاملA centralized privacy-preserving framework for online social networks
There are some critical privacy concerns in the current online social networks (OSNs). Users' information is disclosed to different entities that they were not supposed to access. Furthermore, the notion of friendship is inadequate in OSNs since the degree of social relationships between users dynamically changes over the time. Additionally, users may define similar privacy settings for their f...
متن کاملAn Authorization Framework for Database Systems
Today, data plays an essential role in all levels of human life, from personal cell phones to medical, educational, military and government agencies. In such circumstances, the rate of cyber-attacks is also increasing. According to official reports, data breaches exposed 4.1 billion records in the first half of 2019. An information system consists of several components, which one of the most im...

متن کاملDeveloping the Conceptual and Methodological Framework for Discursive-institutional Analysis of Coastal Exclusive Space Production: with Special Reference to Critical Realism Perspective
Because of the limited capacity of coastal lands and conflicting interests among stakeholders for coastal resources, there are intensifying pressures to retain and provide more public access to the coast. Coastal gated communities have been developed increasingly in the middle shoreline of Caspian Sea in North of Iran. They are kind of exclusive space production as they restrict public access t...
